Success Runs in Our Race: The Complete Guide to Effective Networking in the African American Community
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (July, 1994)
Authors: George C. Fraser and Les Brown
Average review score:

The book for the next millenium!
I would recommend reading this book, as well as giving this book as a gift to all college graduates. The chapter that tells how to create and do an awards ceremony in less than 2 hours alone is worth the price of the book! I particularly liked the way he defined "networking" vs. "neck-working"--and how to handle those who have mistaken one for the other. (Neck-working is misusing your opportunity to network by trying to hit on the opposite sex--a definite no-no!) Mr. Fraser's solid hints on connecting with like-minded individuals in the black community and giving back to the community, not abandoning it are fantastic--and doable. If you like commentary by people like Tavis Smiley, this is your book!

This is an invaluable how-to book for individuals & groups
George Fraser has written a common-sense guide for networking and getting ahead. It includes anecdotes, charts, graphs and folk wisdom. Every home should have this reference book.

Sugarloaf: The Mountain's History, Geology and Natural Lore
Published in Paperback by University Press of Virginia (March, 2003)
Authors: Melanie Choukas-Bradley and Tina Thieme Brown (illustrator)
Average review score:

A truly beautiful book!
Choukas-Bradley and Brown's book is superbly written and provides a wealth of compelling information. Perhaps even more importantly, it reminds us of the value of our connection to sacred places in nature, something so threatened in our modern culture. This book has really increased my appreciation and enjoyment of Sugarlaf Mountain and all the natural beauty that surrounds it.

A Gem of a Book
As a regular visitor to Sugarloaf Mountain, I was pleased to learn so much more about it from reading this book. I normally shy away from nature and history books but the writing in "Sugarloaf: The Mountain's History, Geology and Natural Lore" is so good that it just drew me in. I literally couldn't put the book down!

I especially loved the chapter describing each season on Sugarloaf. With such obvious love for and knowledge of the mountain, the author vividly describes the different aspects of each season in exquisite detail.

I highly recommend this book!

The Sun Will Rise in the West : The Holy Trail
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ansari Publications (October, 2000)

Enlightening
I met Shaykh Taner this past weekend. It was my first real exposure to Sufism. The perspective offered by Shaykh Taner is wonderfully down-to-earth. I have spent the past 15 years of my life building my own understanding of "the truth" as I perceived it and based on my own experiences. Shaykh Taner's explanation of his beliefs was so close to my own that it was breathtaking. I don't foresee myself ever becoming a practicing Muslim. But I found a lot of truth in the Islamic principles as Shaykh Taner explained them. I will always value the time I spent with Shaykh Taner and I look forward to spending more time with him in the future.

After talking with him, I had to purchase the book. I wanted to be able to sit down and take an in-depth look at what this man has to say. I am now about 1/3 of the way through the book and am still finding it to be both enjoyable and enlightening. After having met many close-minded "holy men", Shaykh Taner's openness (and open-mindedness) is refreshing. In the several hours I was with him, I never got the impression that he was trying to "convert" me. He was simply sharing the truth as he perceives it (in his words, "as he has recevied it from Allah"). He lays it on the table. Whether we pick it up or not is entirely up to us and he makes no judgements on our choice (that is up to Allah).

He's not a man who's been cloistered and hidden from reality. He has lived in and survived dangerous times. He explains things from a perspective which is firmly rooted in reality.

"Enlightening" is the only way I can describe the information he passed on in person and in this book. It's not as if he's trying to persuade people to see things his way ... he simply shines a light on what is and leaves it up to the individual to accept it or deny it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone ... regardless of their religious background. Whether you accept it or not, it will definitely make you think.

Sincerely, Mike

Science Meets the Soul
In The Sun Will Rise In The West: The Holy Trail, Shaykh Taner Ansari dispels common myths and presents Sufism as a modern day reality. It presents an unprecedented, truly comprehensive written exposition of Sufism's core teachings in English and is written in a style that is accessible to Americans. Previously this body of knowledge remained either hidden within the oral teachings of the order or locked inside rare Turkish or Arabic texts, never before translated into English. Shaykh Taner's book provides American readers with a unique opportunity to gain a fresh view of the basis of the Islamic faith told from the Sufi perspective.

The Sun Will Rise In The West offers a thought provoking compendium of the entire system of Sufi knowledge, including the larger cosmological perspective. It describes the Sufi understanding of the structure of the universe, the relationship between matter and energy and the Sufi theory of consciousness. The book provides numerous examples and comparisons between Sufism and other knowledge systems such as physics, energy medicine and the Kabbalah. The material is well written and told with a lively sense of humor.

( IN MEMORY OF KIM THI LE PHAN ), THANKS, BARBARA

For those who WANT to be happy after experiencing loss.
Elizabeth Brown very honestly shares her walk down the dark road she must travel after the death of her daughter, Leanne. Ms. Brown reminds her readers that in the grief process there are choices to be made: to hold tight to your joy and blessings or to wallow in misery and allow tragedy to extend in other ways. I read this book shortly after my nine-year-old son was killed in an accident. I was inspired to hear that yes, you can be happy again after the loss of one as special as your own child. Most importantly, Sunrise Tomorrow reminds us that when we are experiencing loss, we are never left alone in our suffering, God has never been closer. In addition, there is solid advice for friends and family on how to help. A guide for planning services and support is included. Ms. Browns comments on how children who were friends and siblings of the deceased child will be affected are right on the nose. Sunrise Tomorrow is a "must read" for the bereaved and for the people who love them.

Sybil Rides for Independence
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (September, 1987)
Authors: Drollene P. Brown, Abby Levine, and Margot Apple
Average review score:

Appealing for young and old. A must read for all girls
The book is an accounting of one young girl's brave ride for freedom during the American Revolution. Sybil Luddington is a true life heroine. The story is easy for young people to understand and demonstrates the role women (girls) played in our country's history. As a native of Connecticut, it was fun to read and share with my daughter a story about the important role a young girl played in the history of Ridgefield and Danbury. A fun way to learn about the American Revolution.

Every teacher should share Sybil's ride with the students!
Drollene Brown gave a fascinating account of Sybil's ride for Independence. (Sibbell is the correct spelling which is on her grave stone.) She is a national heroine and has had very little recognition. There have been great women who have not been given credit for their accomplishments throughout history. Sibbell Ludington is a wonderful example of a brave (soldier) who was willing to sacrifice her life for the independence of her country. All teachers should read the story of Sibbell Ludington to their students to bring interest to the American Revolution. I know I am biased since I am a descendant (Henry James Ludington III) however it is a wonderful account of a 16 year old girl's bravery and loyalty for her country

Symbols in Stone: Symbolism on the Early Temples of the Restoration
Published in Hardcover by Covenant Communications (October, 1997)
Authors: Matthew B. Brown and Paul Thomas Smith
Average review score:

Great discussion of Temple symbolism.
The authors take a detailed look at the Kirland, Nauvoo and Salt Lake City temples and discuss the architecture of each building and the symbolism of various designs in each of the temples. The book is well organized and easy to read. There are good illustrations to help the reader visualize what the authors are discussing. The book has good footnotes and a bibliography for further study. A great plus for the book is that it avoids wierd interpretations of various things like the Saturn stones that were supposed to be put on the Salt Lake Temple but weren't.

Definitions of symbols
I have found this book to be very interesting/intriquing. It has pictures of symbols found on the early Mormon temples and explains what their meanings are.

An excellent how-to on JCL for MVS/ESA
This excellent book is for novice through experienced programmers. It includes information on the more recent releases of MVS, including SMS and its impact to JCL. While the text is good reading, it is also useful as a reference book.

The Very Best JCL Ref I have seen in 16 years of pgmng.
I first encountered Mr. Browns JCL book in it's 1st edition about 10 years ago. I was familar with a JCL book by Shelly & Cashman at the time. Mr Brown's book had much better example's and was written in a conversational style much easier to follow than the standard IBM JCL reference or the Shelley & Cashman book that I already owned. I also have had exposure to a JCL book by Doug Lowe which is a good student text but is weak as a professional's reference after school is complete. I am currently entering my 17th year in programming. I Consult currently at a fortune 500 company, and teach COBOL for a rehabilitation program in Minneapolis. I have just convinced the staff responsible for text selection to replace the Lowe book with Mr. Brown's for the Fall quarter. In my class I have students with various disabilities ranging from physical impairments to learning disabilities. The new larger format of the 3rd edition is appreciated by those with sight impairments, and the numerous examples are appreciated by the student I have with a learning disability. I have recommended the book to many collegues and when I managed a staff of 8 I issued a copy of the book to everyone on my team. Simply put, with the many examples, the style of prose and the excellent index I can not recommend a better book on JCL

Tchaikovsky Through Others' Eyes (Russian Music Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (June, 1999)
Authors: Alexander Poznansky, Malcolm H. Brown, and Robert J. Bird
Average review score:

A wonderful biography
I enjoyed this book very much. A must for anyone interested in Tchaikovsky's life, yet seen through the eyes of people who were close to him. Highly Recommended!

The best kind of biography. A scholar's delight.
This is a marvelous book about Tchaikovsky compiled of diary entries from his contemporaries with commentaries and analysis by Alexander Poznansky. It is the best kind of biography that makes him seem very real, coming to life off the page. It begins in his school years and continues with a variety of rare diaries and letters of people who came in contact with him and kept journals or notes. It covers the entire social range from princes to valets, so we get quite a variety of observations from the intellectual esoteric to the very "earthy." We see not only Tchaikovsky the great composer, but also the student, the philosopher, the scholar, the workman, the card player, the bon vivant, the unsuitable suitor. It also includes explanations and diaries of his ill-fated marriage and many details of his rich personal life. The conflicts and turning points of Tchaikovsky's career and life are well illustrated. Each chapter is chronologically organized with often the inclusion of several diarists, most of whom are included in the copious illustrations. Poznansky begins each chapter with a biographical essay describing the importance of the contributor and the events of Tchaikovsky's life. The comprehensive scholarship is impeccable and the style superb. Poznansky is one of the only serious scholars, who can put together a well researched biography with style, flair and clarity that will satisfy the most stringent musicologist, while also entertaining and moving any Tchaikovsky admirer.
